In order to support the learning of and raising of achievement for all students ensuring every student is stretched, challenged and supported in their academic pathways, we block English, Mathematics and Science lessons in each year group, which allows setting. In the other subjects, we have streaming based on academic ability. Our core purpose is to stretch all of the students, to ensure that they find the work challenging and that they make good progress.
Reviews of the grouping will take place termly following analysis of assessment data.
The prior attainment of students and baseline testing will be used to band each learner into the following categories: D – higher ability students , L – middle ability students O – lower ability students.
The process of setting is based on clear principles:
- It is primarily organised on the basis of expectations of future performance (targets) which are generated from prior attainment.
- Where there is clear evidence of a student’s capacity to progress at a rate greater than prior attainment would suggest, the student may be placed in a higher set and the target adjusted appropriately.
- Where current assessment indicates that a student is not meeting age related expectations, there will be intervention at class/subject/College level before moving him.
